According to foreign media reports on the 4th, following U.S. President Donald Trump, Exxon Mobil Co. (XOM) and other energy companies have also voiced concerns about the proposed bill to tighten sanctions on Russia, warning that such measures could force the closure of the companies' global oil and gas projects involving Russian partners.
Opposition from industries such as energy could complicate the U.S. House of Representatives' prospects for passing the bill. The legislation was introduced, in part, to punish what U.S. officials describe as Russia's interference in last year's U.S. election. Last month, the Senate passed the bill by a bipartisan vote of 98 to 2.
EssenKu's proposal could also create potential political issues for the Trump administration. The Trump administration has been keen to avoid any involvement of Rex Tillerson, EssencoMobil's former CEO and now U.S. Secretary of State, in matters involving conflicts of interest.
Tillerson, who once pledged not to interfere in ExxonMobil's affairs, did not explicitly oppose the bill—but last month, he urged Congress not to take any actions that could tie the government's hands.
